So I'm starting a newsletter...
Trying something new o.O There will be some trials and errors along the way till I perfect the theme and design I like.
Issue #00
Welcome to the newsletter! Thank you for signing up. So I decided to create resources for Discord after working as a freelance Discord manager for over 3 years. Learnt a lot of stuff from managing various types of communities, and I want to share what I can to help you manage your servers better. Whether it be niche features or best practices I hope to cover something worth reading every week.
Each week would be a short read only 2-5 minutes. Some of the editions may be scuffed so bare with me while I try to figure it out. Like I’ve mentioned before newsletter subs get EARLY ACCESS to these articles. Any changes or corrections if needed will be fixed and be publicly available at the Discord Resources Notion page. The short link to remember is https://go.daksh.gg/resources if you need to share it with others.
If you head to the notion page you’ll find 3 articles ready to read! Below I’ll brief what short articles are ready to read!
Levelling and XP Bots Comparison
Some of you may have seen this spread sheet floating around on a few of the META servers. I spent a few hours scavenging the internet for the best levelling bots. After being confused I had to sit down and compare them all and frankly this is how I decided to publish more resources. The article can be found at https://go.daksh.gg/xp-bots .
My personal favourite levelling bots are Polaris and Iris XP. They offer a wide range of features and cover almost everything. Another levelling bot I have my eyes on is Kiai. The bot is ready to use and the devs are working on neat features that would pretty much tick every box in my book.
Timeouts vs mutes
Ever wondered why you should be using one over the other ? Ever had a hard time creating your mute roles ? Both have their pros and cons and is discussed here https://go.daksh.gg/timeout-vs-mute . Both have their use cases. Timeouts are easy to use since they are native and require no setup. However they offer no customisation other than duration of the timeout and is again most often used with a bot. Mutes are OG way of restricting people from speaking, but with new permissions being created recently (Send Messages in threads, Create Forum posts etc.) it can seem daunting to keep updating the system. Mutes still work perfectly fine, they just need a little fine tuning and offer deep customisability. The article should cover almost every aspect to help you make a decision on which system to use. No one’s stopping you from using both ;)
Advertising on Discord
Oh boy, another controversial topic which people still debate. A full and official response from Alpacamike who used to work in Discord made a public statement in one of the Meta Discord servers. As far as it concerns us it is still the official discord response for advertising on discord. The full message can be found here https://go.daksh.gg/ads-on-discord (this one isn’t an article, just the official response since people need something to refer back to)
In short, can you pay for ads on discord ? NO
Discord does not like that. This includes welcome DMs from bots are share “affiliate discord servers”. It’s cringe. No one likes it. Especially when you have 3 bots advertising 15 different servers 💀
So what’s next?
This first publication that I’m calling issue#00 is just a little sneak peak of whats to come. This week I just thought of giving you an idea of what this will be about and I’ve linked articles that are on the notion page
Next week’s article will be published directly in the newsletter email.
Coming up… next weekend will be showing you the proper way to set up your server to achieve a one-click server lockdown. Best part you don’t even need a bot to do it!
I will be discussing other topics outside of discord as well. Mainly, productivity, project management, security and privacy. Will try to mix it up depending what feedback I get
For any feedback feel free to join the Discord, fill in the contact or simply reply back to this email. (the discord server is kinda scuffed but oh well…)
You’ve reached the end but there’s more to come.
